Color palate

Choosing the right color palette for your room can sometimes be all that is needed to make your room look bigger and brighter. While white can be the obvious choice to make a room look more spacious it is not the only color. Using very light or very dark shades will do the trick. Painting a single wall, a darker color can give an illusion of depth.

Windows and curtains

Leaving windows bare will make the room look more spacious but if you need privacy hang floor to ceiling curtains. This will give an illusion of a higher ceiling and bigger windows. Heavy curtains make a room look smaller so opt for lighter curtains the same color as the wall or sheer curtains.

Mirrors

Mirrors can make your room look larger. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors toward it to give the illusion of depth. Mirrors also reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter during the day and night. A carefully placed mirror can make a hallway feel longer, make it seem that there is more seating, or make it look like there are additional windows in a space.

Buy furniture with exposed legs

Chairs, sofas, and beds with exposed legs create an illusion of extra space. While there is not any more physical space, this trick fools the mind into thinking that there is.

See-through furniture

Furniture like glass tables and Lucite chairs do a great job of fooling the eye into thinking there is more space than there is. And, as a bonus, glass, and Lucite are reflective, so they also help to transmit light around the room. Mirrored furniture will provide the same effect.

Consider mirrored dressers, side tables, or console tables to make a small room look bigger.

Floating Furniture

In a tight space, floating furniture is your best friend. It takes up far less room and because of its minimalist style; it takes up very little space visually. Try incorporating floating shelves, media consoles, and desks into your small room design.

Prints

Use small prints or plain colors. While choosing rugs and curtains go for small patterns or plain colors Bold patterns and prints create visual clutter and make your space look smaller. If you must use a bold pattern or color, go with smaller items like a cushion or a frame.

Use rugs to define the spaces.

Area rugs help rooms feel finished and pulled together. But they can also create the illusion of more square footage.

Storage

Buy furniture that can be multifunctional like an ottoman that can turn into a side table or seating Instead of buying a table for six, get a smaller one that is extendable. Keep it small regularly and extend it only when the company comes over. Take advantage of hidden storage to store books, blankets, toys, etc.

The fewer items displayed the better.

It is so important to keep a small space tidy so that it does not feel cramped. If your space is too cramped up invest in a futon. Ottomans, coffee tables, storage beds, and bookcases with doors are also great options. Do not fill up every exposed shelf in a room. Leaving some space will give your small space an airy look.

Lighting

Instead of a single overhead light, have several small lights help the room look expansive and evenly lit. it also helps in rooms that have no natural light. Incorporating ceiling lights with details draws the eye upwards and adds height to a room.

Declutter

Decluttering is very important when space is an issue in your home. Try and declutter once in 6 months to prevent the room from getting overcrowded. It helps keep your house neat and spacious.
